In its green livery, the Irish post box has been a "silent servant and symbol of the State" for many generations. The pillar box, the largest of the family, is a familiar item of urban street furniture.
In the British Isles, the first pillar post boxes were installed in 1852. Between 1866 and 1879 the hexagonal Penfold post box became the standard design for pillar boxes and during this period red was adopted as the standard colour.
These Chocolate Rain postcards from Hong Kong are utterly adorable! Willa went home to Hong Kong for Christmas and offered up some of these cards for trade, mailed from there. I was one of the lucky ones to receive one. I love it! Thank you Willa!!
I love this card from Michele! In the 1950s many cities offered separate mailboxes for local and out of town mail to speed processing. Marketing photos like this promoted their use.
